Summary of mid-2023

May 17, 2023

Half of 2023 has already passed, looking back on these six months, it seems that nothing has been done to satisfy oneself. English learning has stagnated, no new professional skills have been learned, it seems very busy but not sure what is being done. The content of one’s own blog is also rarely updated, and time is basically focused on cryptocurrency.

The biggest attempt in the past six months has been to start quantitative trading of cryptocurrencies, which is a completely new field for me. For most people in China, they think it is a scam, easy to become addicted and lose all their assets. However, since it can generate transactions, it is similar to stocks and funds and can be quantified. Of course, this thing is decentralized and unregulated, making it easy to be influenced by capital and often experiencing extreme ups and downs. Recently, I learned how to short and it surged, then stopped loss and fell sharply, so the trading risk is indeed very high. Trading not only requires learning how to quantify, but also grasping the long-term, medium-term, and short-term trends of the market, as well as comprehensive analysis of various indicators. For this reason, I also consulted a friend of mine who specializes in economics and management. Only with a clear understanding of the overall trend can we better grasp the market trend and trade more accurately. In addition, different market conditions require different trading strategies. Therefore, I need to analyze different market conditions and formulate corresponding trading strategies. These strategies include stop loss, stop profit, adding positions, reducing positions, etc. Only with effective trading strategies can we trade better. Since the attempt two months ago, the average return rate has been around 10% per week, of course, it may be because my principal is not too much, so the return rate from high-risk trading is relatively higher.

During this period, I read two books related to history. One of them is “Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind” which I read in one go and spent more than ten hours on. The author starts from the origin of human beings 6 million years ago and talks about many important events and cultural phenomena in human history, which helps me better understand human history and inspires readers to think about the future of humanity. The other book is “Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies” which I bought and read partially, but recently I saw a two-hour documentary on Bilibili related to it. After watching it, I re-read the book. The author’s analysis of human history is very comprehensive, analyzing the evolution of human history from multiple angles such as biology and sociology, including a large number of historical facts. In fact, for me, this book is not just a reflection on the evolution of human history. Although it is not a book specifically discussing the finance field, some of the theories and viewpoints it proposes are enlightening for the development of the finance field. For example, differences in geographical environment can lead to differences in the level of economic and financial development in different regions.

For a while, I didn’t have time to read and learn. Every day, I was focused on how to meet new product requirements, how to research new content, and how to improve web performance. I was fully immersed in work every day. However, during this time, I discovered a new hobby - Texas Hold’em. Of course, for me, it is just a leisure activity rather than gambling. The most important thing is decision-making ability. Players need to make the right decision in each game, including whether to call, raise, or fold, which may affect the outcome of the entire game. In addition, it is closely related to mathematics. In Texas Hold’em, mathematics is an important tool that can help players better understand the game. For example, by calculating the probability of cards, players can decide whether to bet or fold. Secondly, in Texas Hold’em, there is a professional term called “EV (Expected Value)”, which refers to the expected gain or loss of a certain action under certain circumstances. EV can help players make more rational decisions and improve their winning rate. I like to watch Texas Hold’em-related videos on YouTube after work.

Recently, I have slowly returned to a learning state. I refactored my blog using Astro.js, which is a new beginning for me. I will continue to maintain a learning attitude and improve myself. My goals for the next six months are to improve my English, do well in quantitative trading, read more non-technical books, and learn Texas Hold’em.
